EfficienCE Kick-Off in Leipzig
On 27 and 28 June 2019, around 30 participants from seven Central and Eastern European countries met in Leipzig for the launch of the EU funded EfficienCE project coordinated by the Digital City Unit Leipzig. Together with the Office for Geoinformation & Land Management and the LVB (public transport company), the Digital City Unit is developing applications for more energy-efficient public transport planning in connection with the development of an urban data platform.
During the meeting, the project partners from Vienna (A), Gdynia (PL), Maribor (SI), Bergamo (IT), Plzen (CZ) and Budapest (HU) discussed their different project approaches. In addition to the application of data-based planning, the projects aim to increase the use of renewable energies in the public transport sector, especially in the field of e-mobility, and to develop a job and training profile for energy-managers in public transport companies.

EfficienCE declaration

It doesn’t matter if you belong to a public authority, public transport company, education institution or NGO: we all have to join forces to increase energy efficiency by various measures in our public transport infrastructure.
So by signing the EfficienCE Declaration you will be signaling your commitment to embrace its objectives by:
- Introducing and advocating the improvement of energy efficiency and the increase of the use of renewable energy in public transport;
- Participating in capacity building through joining EfficienCE events and/or making use of the guides, tools and handbooks developed within the project;
- And thus contributing to EfficienCE’s aim to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector.

Get involved: Manchester Innovation Challenge
As a next step in the Triangulum project, our Lighthouse City Manchester is offering an exciting opportunity to explore ways to visualise city information, alongside data generated by the project.
For this, Manchester City Council is working with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and Ordnance Survey (responsible for mapping in the UK) to create a challenge using CityGML, open data model and XML-based format for the storage and exchange of virtual 3D city models.
The challenge is aimed at groups / companies who have expertise and experience in geospaitial data.

Inspiration for Prague from Visit in Brno
From 5-6 June, 2019, representatives from IPR Prague joined the replication workshop “Learning from the most innovative” taking place in the exhibition centre in Brno, Follower City of the Horizon 2020 Smart Cities and Communities project RUGGISED, which organised the workshop.
The workshop consisted of several round table sessions where the Lighthouse- and Follower Cities presented some of their smart solutions and discussed them with the audience afterwards. The round table sessions focused e.g. on technical or governance aspects as well as business models, public procurement, citizen engagement and data usage. The Prague representatives learned about tenant involvement through gamification and met with Sonja Stöffler from University of Stuttgart, another Triangulum representative who joined the meeting as an expert on replication processes.
In addition to the replication workshop, Prague’s team visited the URBIS Smart City Fair and exhibition, to learn from and get inspired by the experiences of other (especially Czech) cities and companies during the creation and implementation of smart solutions.

Triangulum International Conference
We invite you to our international conference on “Energising Cities: Innovations, challenges & solutions” in Stavanger, Norway from 23.-24.09.2019.
On Monday, 23.09., we will start the conference with presentations by Triangulum’s Project Coordinator Trinidad Fernandez-Lopez and European Commission representatives.
There will be two Key Notes by Steve Turner (Digital Cities Lead at Arup) and Martin Brynskov (Chair of Open & Agile Smart Cities, Director of the Centre for Digital Transformation of Cities & Communities and Associate Professor at Aarhus University).
In the afternoon, we look forward to tell you about the replicable success stories from our three Lighthouse- and Fellow Cities including lessons learnt and hands-on experiences and demonstrations from the people of Triangulum. Some of the topics to be discussed in interactive sessions will be climate change, governance, citizen engagement and investment & replication.
On Tuesday, 24.09., we are merging into the official Nordic Edge Expo and Conference 2019. In the afternoon, Triangulum is co-organising the yearly Nordic Edge session “Being a European Lighthouse City – A Journey from the Beginning to the End” where the two new SCC1 projects MAKING-CITY and +CityXChange will be introduced. Before handing over to them, Triangulum will present its main outcomes and learnings and talk about best practices regarding monitoring and evaluation.

Triangulum Representatives at RUGGEDISED Replication Workshop in Brno
Several Triangulum partners, such as our Fellow City Prague representatives Monika Uhlenbruch and Adam Pajgrt from IPR Prague and Sonja Stöffler from the University of Stuttgart, participated in the replication workshop “Learning from the most innovative” organised by RUGGEDISED project in their Fellow City Brno, Czech Republic.
The workshop was held back to back with the Urbis Smart City Fair 2019, inviting interested stakeholders and city and replication representatives from other smart city projects. The aim of the workshop was to help city representatives to learn about the most innovative (smart) city projects throughout Europe.
The workshop was “project focused”, meaning that concrete selected smart solutions were discussed at round tables. While some round tables focused more on technical aspects, others were more devoted to implementation processes, governance aspects, business models, public procurement, citizen engagement and data usage.
Sonja Stöffler from the University of Stuttgart and part of the replication work package of Triangulum participated in the Panel Discussion on “Building Smart Districts by Lighthouse cities leaders and Replication workshop findings”, together with RUGGEDISED representatives Albert Engels, Carina Aschan, Gavin Slater, Katelien van den Berge (previously part of the Stavanger local consortium) and moderated by Mario Gualdi. Triangulum Event in Stavanger
On 23 May, Lighthouse City Stavanger hosted a local event called “Triangulum – what is it and what has it meant for our region?”. Seventy participants from the public and private sector such as the Mayor, politicians, researchers, directors, leaders and employees from the local partner organisations attended the half-day conference about the effects Triangulum has had on Stavanger. The key message was that Triangulum gave the city confidence to become a Smart City and that it has created European market possibilities for local solutions.
The Stavanger partners presented their demonstrations and the positive effects Triangulum has caused in their organisations. For example, Triangulum tremendously helped the municipality in turning Stavanger into a smart city and to take more environmentally friendly decisions.
A dedicated “Project Leader Square” helped participants to easily get into a dialogue with the Triangulum partners during coffee breaks and after the event.
On stage were the directors of the five Triangulum partner organizations and the Mayor of Stavanger. Their shared message was that Triangulum has meant a great deal for all partners in different ways:
- Lyse is implementing the Blink solution in the Follower Cities Sabadell and Prague to test its potential for replication.
- The City of Stavanger has developed a long-term strategic approach to become a smarter city and was recently awarded the smartest city in Norway.
- The University of Stavanger has strengthened its research department regarding Smart City technology. This has also led to several other grand projects.
- Rogaland County Council has lead the way for emission-free buses in Norway.
- Greater Stavanger has worked with communication throughout the project.
The aim of the conference was to tell a shared story about the positive effects Triangulum has had on Stavanger and beyond. The feedback from the event tells us that Stavanger has achieved its goal.

Summary: Triangulum Webinar
The third public webinar in our series of Triangulum webinars has taken place on 14 May at 10 AM (CEST). Whereas last year’s webinar series was centered around topics from within our Lighthouse Cities, such as urban biking or data platforms, the 2019 series focuses on the needs of our Follower Cities Prague, Sabadell and Leipzig. We specifically asked them “What are you interested in?” and “Where do you need some more input?” and the answers were quite clear!
Prague decided for a consortium-internal webinar at the end of March 2019 where they gathered the majority of Triangulum partners in a virtual webinar room to discuss some very specific topics. The results of these “secret” discussions will be available soon – come back for more information in the coming months.
Getting back to Sabadell, they told us that they are interested in hearing more about green mobility, especially with respect to schools. So we got Mark Cox from the City of Eindhoven to talk about this topic and to talk about how biking is done in the Netherlands (Spoiler: it’s different! Children seem to learn how to ride a bike before they learn how to walk…). Moreover, Vin Sumner, the CEO of Clicks and Links, an SME that has been very actively involved in our Lighthouse City Manchester, talked about city visualisation technologies by referring to the many benefits of virtual reality and teaching us about how digital twins support city development. Finally, Adrian Slatcher from the Manchester City Council presented the topic of IoT – the Internet of Things, explaining what it is and why the human element plays a crucial role in anything IoT related.

Demonstration of Triangulum at the Sabadell High School “Institut Sabadell”
At the request of the Sabadell High School “Institut Sabadell”, around 100 students around 13 years-old received a presentation on Triangulum on 8 and 9 April. First, a general presentation on the Sabadell Follower City Implementation Strategy (FCIS) was given, describing the ten actions under implementation and the philosophy of replication from Lighthouse Cities.
Moreover, there was a focus on two of them that were more related to education centres: “Green mobility to schools” and “Maker spaces”. Students could give their view on how to improve green mobility to schools, making specific suggestions related to favouring the use of soft mobility means.
Finally, a live demonstration of a laser cutter machine was performed at the classroom which has been purchased by the municipality as part of Triangulum, and which is one of the main tools for “maker spaces”. On the second day, the students visited the municipal fleet of sustainable vehicles, also purchased as part of Triangulum, and were demonstrated the use of e-bikes, e-motorbikes and e-cars for the maintenance of public spaces of Sabadell, as well as for the use of the Municipal Police.
